This week, second grade classes at Ashaway and Hope Valley sang Christmas carols around the school to different classrooms. We sang Cascabel (Jingle Bells) and Feliz Navidad. Below are the videos from each class. They all did an amazing job! Have a great vacation and I will see everyone in the new year!

CarolingSecond grade parents, you have probably heard from your child that we will be singing Christmas carols around the school. We have been practicing for weeks. Ashaway students will carol to classrooms on Wednesday, December 20th and Hope Valley students will carol to classrooms on Thursday, December 21st. Students are welcome to bring in/wear festive attire such as red and green clothes, santa hats, reindeer antlers, etc. I will record each class singing for parents to view, so stay tuned! FerdinandI will be going to see the movie Ferdinand at Regal Cinemas in North Stonington this Saturday, December 16 at 4:20pm. It is a PG rated animated film about a friendly bull in Spain who is taken from his home when he is mistaken as dangerous. If any parents, students, or teachers are also interested in going to see Ferdinand, I would love to see you there! The movie comes out on Friday so it will still be very new. It might be a good idea to purchase your tickets in advance. And keep in mind that you would need to go on your own and stay with your child as you normally would.... this is not a Señora Carpenter sponsored field trip! :) This is just a friendly update to let you know that I will be at Ashaway for conferences on Monday, December 11 and I will be at Hope Valley for conferences on Tuesday, December 12. I will not be at Richmond.
If you would like to meet with me, you can come to my room on conference day (the classroom teacher can show you where it is) or I can meet you in the classroom teacher's room. If you are unable to meet with me but have any questions or concerns, you can always email me at [email protected]. Although Thanksgiving is only celebrated in the U.S. and Canada, students were happy to use our Spanish vocabulary to make turkeys and share what we are thankful for this week. Mrs. Haberek and Mrs. Lily's classes wrote what they are thankful for on a feather and we added it to a class turkey. Second grade played a game where they added feathers to a turkey and colored them based on what number they rolled on a dice. Check out Trinity and Landon's above (Mrs. Pierce's class) as well as Jude's as he worked on it (Mrs. Gray's class). Mrs. Zonfrilli's class colored a color-by-number turkey then glued him to a yellow paper where they wrote what they are thankful for. Other classes at Ashaway will be working on these activities tomorrow!
Some of the things we are thankful for at Ashaway and Hope Valley Elementary Schools are... la familia - family las mascotas - pets la escuela - school la tecnología - technology Dios - God los amigos - friends mi casa - our houses la comida - food la ropa - clothing We are a thankful bunch! Have a Happy and healthy Thanksgiving! My second graders have been doing so many wonderful things! Last week, my second grade classes at Ashaway and Richmond wrote letters in Spanish thanking veterans for their service. These letters were mailed out to Operation Gratitude so that Veterans will receive them. The picture below is from Miss Cormier's class at Richmond. Kohen wrote that he is thankful to veterans for keeping our country safe and working hard. All 5 of my grade 2 classes wrote a book on the weather and seasons and we have been reading it in class. Below are pictures of students reading with a partner and reading aloud to the class.
This week and last week we celebrated El Día de los Muertos in Spanish classes (although the "hurricane" days put a bit of a damper on our plans). The Day of the Dead is celebrated in Mexico and some Latin American countries as well as by many Mexican Americans. It takes place on November 1 and 2 and is a celebration that honors ancestors. It is a happy celebration in which people remember the lives of their loved ones who have passed away. The Pixar movie Coco, which comes out November 22 in theaters, has a lot to do with this cultural celebration and the way Mexicans view death. I definitely plan on seeing it!
